There’s a line in the film where the character MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) says, “Agar duniya mein sab comfortable hote toh rap kaun karta?” That’s an insight that comes only from a true fan of this performing art. Director Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’ is the definitive look at the rap scene in India. It chronicles the story of an ordinary boy Murad, from Dharavi, who dreams big and refuses to let adversity squash his spirit. His journey from being the quintessential slumdog to being an ambitious rapper named Gully Boy, is exhilarating and exciting, to say the least. Rap is an unconventional genre of music in India, but even those who don’t necessarily associate with this form of music, will be able appreciate the underdog and heartfelt story.
You want to see a movie with really good story and acting - then this is your answer. The movie is near perfection - the storyline, the acting, the direction, the cast, the location, the dialogue everything every single aspect is wonderfully shot. The story is as every one knows is inspired by real life story of a raper known by his rapping name Divine. There is nothing much to say about it - just watch the movie. Full paisa Vasool.
Zoya Akhtar completely does justice to her reputation as a director once again,by delivering a phenomenal movie ! Never had I imagined that Indian Hip-Hop could be so beautifully portrayed in an underdog movie which is though predictable, yet heart-touching and at the same time immensely motivating and energetic ! A simple yet nicely written script, accompanied by some strong, impactful performances and the "Zoya touch" creates something really magical here !
Most people have already watched this movie, but to those who haven't,DON'T MISS IT !! Zoya Akhtar completely does justice to her reputation as a director once again,by delivering a phenomenal movie ! Never had I imagined that Indian Hip-Hop could be so beautifully potrayed in an underdog movie which is though predictable, yet heart-touching and at the same time immensely motivating and energetic ! A simple yet nicely written script, accompanied by some strong, impactful performances and the "Zoya touch" creates something really magical here ! Ranveer and Alia are terrific, their chemistry with just about the adequate fizz, does work really well and special praises to Siddhant Chaturvedi (aka MC Sher) who really roares throughout the film [another hidden talent unearthed I would say].
It’s sheer cinematic pleasure to experience an hard-core Bollywood musical in the true sense which has an immensely likable collaboration from various vocal artists who contribute towards nineteen original soundtracks in this movie. The film is about the inspiring journey of a young boy Murad(Ranveer Singh) who lives in Dharavi and aspires to be an rap artiste. The journey isn’t easy, with only his passion & perseverance at helm he marches ahead to achieve his musical dream & succeeds too. Inspired from and based on the real life struggle and success of street rap artists turned internet sensations Divine & Naezy, this musical extravaganza is a viewer’s delight. Director Zoya Akhtar does a fantastic job and deserves even more praise for the error free perfectly scripted screenplay(along with Reema Kagti). Dialogues by Vijay Maurya are even more praiseworthy. The only hitch is the running time of around 155 minutes, no doubt around 25 minutes could’ve been meticulously chopped off. The musical bonanza in the movie needs to be heard, watched & experienced to believe how authentically unconventional & different it is from the regular Bollywood fare nowadays. Ranveer Singh seems to be on an all time high as he efficiently portrays the steady & believable journey from Murad to Gully Boy. Alia Bhatt playing his possessive jealous girlfriend is in great form. Siddhant Chaturvedi is a pleasant revelation in his impressive debut. Vijay Raaz nails it as the abusive father. Having lesser screen time actors like Vijay Verma, Ved Thapar, Amruta Subhash,Sheeba Chaddha & Nakul Sahadev make their impeccable presence felt. Somehow Kalki Koechlin’s role doesn’t work out. Gully Boy is like an welcome change and just how many Bollywood films can be categorized as musicals in the true sense? In the recent past Abhishek Kapoor’s Rock On (2008) & Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar(2011) had Rock Music as their theme, Gully Boy only raises the bar higher. Madam Akhtar who had earlier directed notable films like Luck by Chance(2009), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara(2011) & Dil Dhadakne Do(2015) has given us the best film from her Resume till date with Gully Boy.
Excellent acting from ranveer Singh. He has become a very matured actor from all angles when compared to his previous movies. The story is very realistic and its like a neighbourhood movie. You can see yourself in many characters of the movie. The struggle of a common man to achieve his dreams is very vividly shown
Gully boy is one of the best movies that i have watched.Acting of ranveer is just outstanding and the songs are beautifully sung by him.I loved the acting and dressing of Ranveer in gully boy. and Alia is just outstanding. She is over protective girl friend in the movie. The dialogues of the movie are excellent and songs are rocking !!
Gully Boy traces the story of Murad (Ranveer Singh), who comes from the slums of Dharavi. He firmly believes that you need to change your reality to match your dreams and not the other way round, like his father (Vijay Raaz) advocates. He always has a diary handy and scribbles poetry in his moments of quick reflection and darkness of the night. The diary is a depository of his angst, his disappointments, his helplessness in dire situations and also, his dreams. It is in this diary that he writes, "Apna Time Aayega" (My time will come) for the first time and goes on rap the same lines to win a competition in the climax.
If we look out for main star of the film i feel it is its music... The many artistes who are credited for the music of the film do a classy job with the soundtrack.... If Ranveer Singh is the life of Gully Boy, the music is its soul.... The lyrics, the beats all scream revolution... Movie story keeps you stick to it. its a story of how a dharavi boy Murad goes to the top on Rap music while stunning all others, Alia's work as a overprotective gf is awesome...
Amazing movie based on the cruel indian rappers!! Direction, story, and acting is very good ..a must watch movie to learn the lesson which movie is giving to us and the hip hop has been beautifully displayed and enacted....watch at least once!!! Plenty to ponder ..
This is one of the best Bollywood movies ever. Kalki Koechlin playing a music lover who is somewhat of a bohemian rebel, too brings out all the nuances of her character excellently. Ranveer Singh gives his heart and soul to the film. His face, his eyes convey the pain, the angst, as well as the elation felt by his character at different points. He raps with an intensity and wins you over with his passion. His confrontation scene with the father could easily have gone over the top but Ranveer balances it well. He's been known for his OTT characters but in Gully Boy Ranveer has shown he can impart gravitas as well. Bollywood music holds sway over Indian listeners and this film ironically may help bring to mainstream the underground rap music flourishing currently. Watch the film for it's music, as well as some superlative acting by the entire cast.
Movie seems stretched. Could've easily ended in 2 hours. Social agendas are unnecessarily added. Few special appearances are nice! In terms of acting alia bhatt killed it. In my opinion siddhant chaturvedi did a way better job than ranveer singh. Rest everyone else were nice too. Good they actually put so many rap battles and actually showed them on screen. Can be watched once.
This is the movie based on the indian rappers. There is a good chemistry between singh and bhatt. Zoya Akhtar has completely satisfied the viewers with the direction. The indian hip hop has been beautifully displayed in gully boy. Without any hesitation, i would say that this is a must watch movie
Gully Boy is a nice movie directed by Zoya Akhtar. Murad (Ranveer Singh) played the main role. Murad is from a poor family and wants to be a rapper. The film is all about his struggle for achieving his goal. His family and friends help him in achieving his goal. Safeena (Alia Bhatt) pages the role of lover of Murad and acts well. The movie is full of liveliness. Everyone will enjoy watching this movie and will appreciate the role of Ranveer Singh. I will strongly recommend everyone to watch this movie in Cinema hall alongwith their family and friends.
The movie was very good. I watched it twice and both time at a cinema hall. The story was amazing and role play of the characters too.It is a must watch movie. Songs were also very good. The way Ranveer Singh tries to get up is amazing and Alia's role was also good.
Bahut Hard, Bahut Hard ! Haha,it really is very amazing... We've never had a movie based on rappers yet in our country and gully boy came in like a banger! The songs, the visuals, Ranveers acting, everything absolutely MARVELOUS ! Hands down the best movie of 2019 till now.
It is one of the best cult movies released in 2019. Though the story is inspired from Naezy and Divine, Murad has a character of its own and is completely justified by Ranveer Singh. The biggest highlight is MC Sher, Sidharth Chaturvedi who nailed his first movie and in some places outperformed the brilliance of Ranveer Singh. Another great thing is all major characters have a story line of their own and reason why they are who they are. Great story line and direction by Zoya.
And the Movie is "Hard hai". Entertainment ek dum hard h boss. An entertaining and engaging look at the world of indian rappers. The gully boy movie is a glorious blend of hip hop and rapping. Ranveer Singh is poor but hard worker, his hardwork shows what he actually does in his life and the alia bhat is "Tod-Phod".
Personally i didnt like the movie much. All actors have done a wonderful job but it looked like a rap audition of 2.5hours rather than a movie. Only 3raps of all were good. Rest all were gutter raps. 1st half of movie was better than 2nd half. I wont suggest this movie. At one stage my head was paining like hell.
The movie was great. If you have to enjoy this movie you should go to the theatre. You can't enjoy the rap songs of the movie in your Mobile phones. The songs in the movie are just great as nowadays youth love rap music. Devine has done a great job in music department. Ranveer singh is the hero of the movie so what else you can accept from acting man he has just killed it with not only acting but his singing also. Direction by zoya Akhtar was also great the way a gully boy from slums shows so much dedication and he knows that one day his day will come ( Apna time aayega) and he will be a big person. so overall a great movie ,a great story and visuals everything was great. Must watch movie to get some motivation.
Overall its a good movie with different content in Bollywood. Ranveer and alia nailed the role completely but the show stealer was siddhant (mc sher).Zoya akhtar direction and rap song was good.Vijay raaz also did a good job. It's an inspirational movie !!!
A mainstream rap musical served up with generous helpings of deftly written hip-hop lyrics and an appealing, largely well-woven narrative starring Ranveer Singh in all his charms. its amzing to see ranveer singh in this movie.. extra ordinary acting.
This movie is about life of 22 year old boy who is from Mumbai. It is about chasing the dream.Dreams and reality are fused together in this movie. It features some splendid performances and is a classic movie.I was wiping tears and cheering not for just Murad but for each one of these characters to find happiness.. Overall it is a good entertaining movie !!
What an awesome movie !!! Great story and good acting by Ranveer singh and Alia Bhat. Dialogues of the movie were pretty amazing, also the rap was good and just love the song Apna time aayega.Had a good time with my friends watching such an amazing movie - Must watch ..
Really enjoyed the struggling life of a Rapper in city of dreams Mumbai. Ranveer Singh played the role very well that even Amitabh Bachchan couldnt not help but appreciate him. Alia Bhatt and Siddhant Chaturvedi also played their character very well.As the movie is based on music and struggle, the songs are very good. Movie is directed very well and story is very good as well and director directed the movie as good as the story itself.
Story is surprisingly strong and very long and it make you to think what would happen in future. Acting is good and everyone in that movie are acting a lot better than many movies nowadays. Many side characters did their role better. Main highlights in this story is dialogues and songs which impressed me a lot better. Visuals are just fair enough, not the great. I am suggesting my friends to watch this
Great movie & awesome acting by the whole troop brought out the beauty of rap culture from Mumbai streets to the silver screen. Also some great music by Javed akhter and Divine lyrics as well. Ranveer gave a great mellow down performance - which wasnt expected of him.Introduction of MC Sher also great.
The movie revolves around the protagonist Murad, and his journey from the streets of Dharavi. He and his overprotective girlfriend Safeena are fighting their own battles in their lives. After befriending MC Sher, another budding rapper who introduces him to the urban rap scene. Murad finds himself outside of his comfort zone, and begins to improve his rap game. Kalki plays the role of Sky, a Berkeley Music student who's back in India for a music project. The movie has great direction an brilliant visuals, albeit some of them straight away nabbed from the critically acclaimed movie 8 Mile. The acting is convincing and the story keeps you hooked till the last minute.
The film is about the inspiring journey of young boy Murad who lives in dharavai and aspires to be an rap artiste. The journey is not easy, only his passion & perseverance at helm he marches ahead to achieve his musical dream & succeeds too!! The musical Bonanza needs to be heard, watched & experienced to believe how authentically unconventional and different from regular Bollywood movies now a days.
The movie is about a slum Boy who wants to achieve the goals of his life but his father, who is giving fees for his studies says no to him.He finds a mentor who supports his interest of writing and Rapping. The Father of a slum boy marries again and tortures Slum Boy's mother. They seperate and Slum boy chooses a interest in his life against Boring Life. The Movie is Good with Story but Climax is Simple. Direction is Good and Music was best with Indian Rapping Style. Background Score is also good. Overall Movie is fantastic and I will give 4 Stars.
Well! A great movie as in introduces the unaware audience to indian street hip hop culture which is still considered as a bad thing here due to some earlier controversial artist, the movie itself is based upon the experiences of Naezy and Divine.Zoya akhtar has really tried to bring lot of underground artists in the light like kaam bhari, 7 bantaiz etc.Getting ranveer singh was a smart move to gather audience to watch it and introduce them to the hip hop culture we have here in India and the struggles of rappers in india as in some places it's still considered a taboo or a western thing, a great movie overall.
Ranveer's restrained performance as Murad and as a man who has found his freedom as gully boy is moving. The film has a soul with satisfying story arch. Most people have already watched this film but who haven't dont miss it. I never get time to watch movies but this is the best movie in the recent times. It was worth my time & I loved the movie
It's a must watch movie..... Ranveer is fabulous as usual, his acting is tremendous, his costars hv done a grt job too alia n sher who played the friend who is a rapper too..... U will get goosebumps esp in scenes where he involves in rap... A must watch as I said before
A movie based in Mumbai slums - it depicts the story of Murad - who has to battle out his personal and social disadvantages to chase his passion to be a rapper. For a non Mumbaikar - it shows a lot of Mumbai - even though mostly slums. The biggest show stealers of the movie are it's music & visuals. The raps written & performed in the movie are simply superb. All characters are nicely written and the actors have done justice to their roles - a bit too good. Ranvir shines as Murad. His role as Murad is captivating. Alia fires as Safeena - as one of the girls any guy would dream to have a relationship with. Mc sher AKA Srikanth has played a memorable role and he depicts the role of a friend who stands by and supports Murad from his beginning till stardom - even after he misses out from participating in the finals of the rap competition. A really captivating and entertaining movie - go watch it in theatres if you haven't watched it yet !!
Everything about this movie is just awesome. Great songs, good direction, great story. It shows how a rapper survives in India. And the more awesome thing a sequel is been directed. A must watch movie. Ranveer Singh's acting is just awesome whether it is any role same in this case.
This is one of the most inspirational movie in the recent past. It doesn't only show the shady backdrop but as well as the strong will in that scenario. And the acting skills of ranveer Singh and alia bhatt is just awesome. But the surprise one is siddhant. He is damn good in his character seems like he is the real Naezy - the rapper.
Best movie this year without a doubt. Ranveer is just outstanding .I dont know how he can be a rapper in movie, and originally looks like that also,he also made some rap here.Overall its awesome, full touching and entertaining.Alia is also very good here.I just loved her character.
The movie of a underwhelming rapper laced in the musical world & his struggle is a fantastic storyline in Indian cinemas, but unknowing the whole rap & its influences isn't the way of Indian lifestyle but one who understands that is the one who enjoys the plot. With such a strong storyline along with charismatic RANVEER Singh would have been expected to be a very good entertainer, but the movie fails to build on both storyline & RANVEER Singhs skills as an actor. Having said that the movie is for niche audiences with limited entertainment is the downside, its not like any other RANVEER movie for mass especially not like the earlier rohit shetty or sanjay leela bansali quality. Overall the movie is somewhat influenced by prabhudevas dance series of movies & tilts sometimes towards rockstar kind
The flim has a very good story line which is different from most the Indian movies . Story is based on Kickstart rapper Murad who chases his dreams inspite of struggles in his life . Great work by Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. Also , the picturisation has epic , so realistic...
The movie was good fun and surprisingly not cliched as I thought it would be. Dialogue writing could be better but the music, the acting and the heart in the whole movie made up for it. They worked hard to stay true to the reality while making it larger than life and that is to be appreciated whole heartedly. Must watch for lovers of rap but even more important for people who do not know rap and the power of it.
It's not about only a rap,it's about every person who struggles their own inside.its the story about every struggling person who trapped under the bloody society.who want to fly,who want to go outside, who want do something.its not a rap movie,it's truly a inspirational movie.
Based on the life of rappers, the musical drama has Ranveer playing underdog rapper murad khan and bhatt playing his love interest safeena. The film revolves around murad fighting poverty and obstacles that come his way as he aspires to become a popular rapper. As the despair continues to hound him, murad continues to dream big and doesn't adversity affect him,set against the backdrop of dharavi (gully boy) traces this rapper's journey out of a hellhole.
